Baroque Gems of London: Handel & Mattheis

Handel & Mattheis; both musical geniuses, and both newcomers hoping to forge a successful career in London.

As one of the most influential composers of the Baroque period, Handel's music has transcended time and continues to inspire audiences today. From Germany to Italy and then settling in England in 1712, Handel became a prominent figure in London's musical scene, leaving behind a lasting legacy.  The program also features the lesser-known baroque gem, Matteis. Born in Italy, Matteis came to London in the early 1670s and quickly made a name for himself with his imaginative and virtuosic performances. He was influential in changing the English taste in violin playing from the French style to an Italian one, making him an important figure in the history of violin music in England.

Programme:

Handel Violin Sonata in A major (HWV 361), Violin Sonata in D minor (HWV 359a), Harpsichord Suite No. 4 in E minor and Violin Sonata in D major (HWV 371)

Mattheis Adagio & 'Diverse bizzarrie sopra la vecchia sarabanda o pur ciaccona'
